Prime vs Zoom Lens…Which is right for you? – Knowles Photography

So when deciding on your lens PRIME vs ZOOM some questions you may want to consider are:

  • What will you be photographing most?
  • Will your subjects be close or further away?
  • Does weight matter? Will you be able to hold and stabilize a heavier lens?
  • Do you want to zoom or do you want to be the zoom?

Zoom or Prime Lens. Which lens is right for you?

Many will say a lens plays one of the most important roles in creating and capturing your picture. The lens controls the image being projected onto your camera sensor which in turns creates the final image you see on display on the back of your camera.

“SAVE ON THE CAMERA BODY & SPEND ON THE GLASS”

You may often times have heard this or read it when searching online on what to do. When you hear or see the word glass this is referring to the camera lens.

Before we jump into the two lens choices lets chat a little about the camera basics.

The numbers and letters on the side of your lens tell you all sorts of information. Most importantly your focal length and aperture.

FOCAL LENGTH allows your focal point to be wider to narrow ranges or zoomed shots. With a zoom lens you will be able to stand in one place and change the focal length by adjusting your zoom. With a prime lens you are the zoom, the focal length will always stay the same. So if you want a closer shot you will need to more closer and vice versa.

APERTURE tells the maximum amount of light that a lens can gather. 1.8 aperture means more light is coming into the lens & camera therefore you could be used in lower light situations without having to use a flash. A zoom lens aperture maximum could depend on the focal length (ie: 18-200mm & F3.5-5.6).

There is a lot to think about when choosing the right lens for you. Besides all of these topics to think about, make sure you take into account brand, price, new vs used and your camera being full frame or crop sensor.

Are you getting the most out of your DSLR camera?!  Let’s get you out of that “auto” mode. No big deal! It can be our little secret. But I have also have a secret, Ready?? Shhhh….You’re a better photographer than you think.  What’s even better is you’re a better photographer than your camera thinks you are!

Come #CLICKITWITHKNOWLESPHOTOGRAPHY !!

I can help show you how to get more from your camera and start telling it what you want your camera to do for you.

The School Bus is HERE..Tips for Back to School Photos – Knowles Photography

It is that time of year again. Many of us are gearing up for the back to school season. Summer has been a blast, but it is time for school once again. You have done your back to school shopping, gotten a new backpack and lunch box, maybe some new school shoes and clothes. Now there is one last thing you must do…..capture this moment!!

It is their first day of starting a new year. Time to capture it. You may be thinking “but how?” and that my sweet friend is what I wanted to chat about today.

Knowles Photography, Marshville NC Photographer, Monroe Photographer, Charlotte Photographer, amandaknowlesphotography, #KnowlesPhotography, newborn photography, monroe newborn photographer, marshville newborn photographer, charlotte newborn photographer, wadesboro newborn photographer, pageland newborn photographer, Charlotte Baby Photographer, Monroe Baby Photographer, Marshville Baby Photographer, twin newborn photographer, maternity photographer, world pregnancy day, newborn baby NC Photographer, Cute kid photos, photographer near me, back to school photos

Here are some fun tips to capture those memorable new chapter of our kiddos going back to school.

1. New Routine

New school year, means they are a little older and may have a new routine. Where you were once putting on their shoes for them, maybe they are doing that now. Throw on their backpack, have them sit down to put on their school shoes and capture this.

Did they fix their own breakfast? Capture them making it or even just eating a bowl of cereal at the table. Either way embrace the new routine and soak it all in with capturing the NEW.

2. Props

Moms this can be an easy excuse to get yourself something cute to use as a prop. I’m always loving a chalkboard or letter board to add some personalization to your props. These make the perfect little item to add into your picture to date it, add the grade or school they are going to, and maybe what they want to be when they grow up.

3. Emotion

Starting something new for a kiddo can be full of mixed emotions. Are they jumping up and down super excited to be going to big kid school for the first time? Are they nervous for riding the bus for the first time? Are they sad because they will miss you so much? Whatever their emotion is you can be sure you will capture it. They do not have to smile to create a moving and memorable picture that tells who they are and how they are feeling. And lets be honest, we should be capturing our own emotion too of their first day so make sure you are taking a selfie too.

4. Backpack

I love this shot personally. It is great for so many reasons. You can capture a lot within just a few short clicks of the camera. Putting on their backpack for their first day of school…super cute. Having them turn around and looking at you over their shoulders….love love love as it truly captures them and their size (this one is great to do first and last day of school to see how much they have grown and changed throughout the school year). Plus even their personality too if they have a new backpack they picked out and want to show it off. Walking onto the bus or into school and maybe waving goodbye….all the feels.

Whether you are shooting on automatic mode {the green box setting} or using a fun Portrait preset {the lady with the hat} the most important thing is you are capturing these moments for you and your kiddos.

You maybe thinking now what? Look back at your pictures and have even more fun with ordering some prints or chatbook too. Your kids will love to look back at these photos you took and always makes a good story to share to.

Cheers Mama!! You made it through the summer. Grab yourself a cup of coffee, hot tea or go all out and get yourself a mimosa.

Yay!!

Top 5 Must haves for a new mom that you may not have of thought of…Love, Knowles Photography

So many people will chime in ideas of the must haves for a new mom. There are so many cool things these days to make your life easier with the transition of a new baby in to your home. You will always need the basics…stroller, car seat, crib, pack in play, diapers, wipes, teething toys, baby toys, books, swaddles, etc

But I am here to talk about five items that weren’t talked that much about but as a mom I fell in love with them. And one item I even use during my newborn sessions.

Here are my top 5 must haves for a new mom (that you may not have heard about):

  1. Baby Susher
  2.  Battery Operated Nose Sucker
  3. Nursing Top/Baby Cover
  4. Pack in Play Mattress
  5. Aquaphor

Lets dive in to each of these items for a little more detail as to why I love them.

BABY SUSHER

This is the one that I love and I also use it during newborn sessions. It is so awesome because the volume is easily adjustable. So you can start off really loud when baby is fussy then slowly turn it to reduce the volume as baby starts to calm down. It also has a timer for 15 or 30 minutes, which is great since it is battery operated and helps to prevent the batteries from dying so quickly. The sushing sound is one of the 5 S’s I talked about in an earlier blog post “The 5 S’s to help soothe a newborn“. For both my babies and all my newborns during their sessions I will shush really loud to help calm them. The sound mimics the sounds they hear in the womb so it provides comfort for them. Plus the baby susher is so easily portable.

BATTERY OPERATED NOSE SUCKER

So when I had my first baby we started with the regular nose sucker bulb. That lasted one time before we switched to the nose freeda. Which I will be honest takes some mental adjustment as you are sucking the boogers out yourself. Then!! I learned about a batter operated nose sucker!! And let me tell you this is my new favorite especially for when they have those colds where their mucus is thick. This sucker works great and it has a clear compartment that you can see easily how much you are getting out of your little one to help them be able to breathe better. It is super easy and quick to clean.

NURSING TOP/BABY COVER

When I had my two little ones I used a more traditional nursing cover, but now they have some really cute trendy ones that I love. They are super functional where they can be used for multiple purposes….a nursing cover when you pull it down, a scarf when you keep it scrunched up around your neck, or put it over your carseat as a cover to prevent people from touching your little one if not desired as well as blocking the sun or wind.

PACK IN PLAY MATTRESS

OMG have you ever actual felt the pack in play “mattress” that comes in the pack in plays. It is so freaking hard!!! No wonder my kids never slept well on it until I learned about the pack in play mattress. It is about an inch and half thick and still pretty firm, but not HARD. It is very comparable to an infant crib mattress. It makes traveling with a little one or toddler so much better because they can sleep more comfortably. This is one item I usually buy all my friends because it is not something that you would think about but definitely something you would get a lot of use out of for traveling or even having a place for your little one to sleep downstairs or at family’s house for those visits that fall during nap times.

AQUAPHOR

I was actually introduced to this in college by one of my classmates. Since then I have found it to be more and more useful with having kids. I keep one in my purse, my car, nightstand, kids room and bathroom. It is everywhere and easily accessible. It is so great for dry skin. You can use it on your skin or chapped lips. I use it for diaper rash or preventing diaper rash when your little one might be sick because virus poops usually always result in a bad diaper rash so as soon as they show the first sign of it I would put it on each diaper change to help prevent from a diaper rash. I mean it is bad enough when they get sick then to add diaper rash on top of it….sad. It also makes a great mixing agent with essential oils. My favorite is for lavender oil and aquaphor. I learned this combo when I burnt myself and put this on it and the next day you couldn’t even tell I had a burn.

I love to learn about new gadgets and what not that comes out. So if you have a cool item, tip or trick please share it with me. Send me an email at amanda@amandaknowlesphotography.com . I can’t wait to hear from everyone on their favorites too.

Hugs,

It is very near and dear to my heart the effects that Hurricane Florence left for our North Carolina east coast. Some of you may not know, but I lived there throughout college and after college. My in-laws and sister currently live there NOW. They all had to evacuate their homes and hope for the best when Hurricane Florence made landfall. They are very fortunate to only have a little damage to their homes where as others have lost everything. I know it isn’t showing up on the TV or our news feeds as much anymore, but there is still a lot of people suffering and without water or electricity. Or worse still flooded.

I want to help provide relief for the victims as well as the first responders and people volunteering to help all the people who have suffered or are currently suffering from the damage of Hurricane Florence. Plus the Cape Fear River is still flooding and is a record HIGHS.
